So would you like to know how to drive your professors crazy? How to drive your friends crazy? You probably already drive your parents crazy so you don’t need to worry about that.
So wait until the professor makes a statement of fact then get ready to challenge them. Start by getting yourself into a state of curiosity – look thoughtful – get their attention and hold it for as long as you can before speaking and then start with a simple statement designed to build rapport such as:
- I have been thinking about that.
- I have been wondering about that.
- Now that is really interesting.
Pause for a moment and then ask your question, for example:
- So how do you know that to be true?
- Can you show me the actual evidence to support your assertion?
- How could that have been possible?
So what you are attempting to do is to build a detailed video in the cinema of your mind of what the person is talking about based upon facts rather than your hallucination of what you think they are talking about.
Now if the speaker was referring to a Hollywood type film ask them:
- Is everything that happens in that film based 100% on factual evidence or is it fiction wrapped around a historical event? Can you tell me which bits are fact and which bits are fiction? It is important to be sincere in your quest to gather information. Learn to play the naïve inquirer who is just looking to gather information
If the speaker is referring to a video documentary or a Youtube type video or a still photograph ask them:
- Who is holding the camera? Who does the photographer work for?
- How did the photographer happen to be there at the appropriate time to get the footage?
- If there was footage from other perspectives what would it show?
- What are we not seeing in that footage?
- When was the photograph taken – can you give me the date and time?
- Where was the photograph taken – specifically what is the location?
- Was the event staged for the photographer?
- Has the video footage or the photograph been edited or colorised in any way?
- Are they showing all the footage the photographer took or have they deleted some of it? What are they not showing? What happened prior to the photographs being taken? What happened after the photographs being taken?
Now if the speaker was referring to a book ask them:
- Did the author actually write the book or was it written by a ghost-writer?
- Have you checked the bibliography in the back of the book to see if the sources of information are credible? And have you followed those references back to their original source?
So in simple terms what you are doing is challenging your assumptions. If you want to teach your friends to get into the habit of questioning their assumptions then show them how to play the NLP Match Box Game.
And if you want to develop the skills of an investigative journalist and get really good at challenging your assumptions – and the assumptions of others – such that you can gather high quality information then take a look at the NLP Peace Mapping Course which unleashes the power of the NLP Meta Model.
