I created a game with which you can change not just yourself but the entire world – well maybe not the entire world but your world. It is called the NLP Peace Mapping Game but will probably end up being called the NLP Match Box Game.
Are you ready to have some fun?
So the purpose of the peace mapping game is to teach people to challenge their assumptions. If you challenge an assumption and you learn that you are correct then you score one point – but if you challenge an assumption and you discover that you were wrong then you get two points. The reason being is that we want to reward people for making an effort to challenge their assumptions – it is not about being right but about making an effort to explore the edge of your map and learn something new.
The hardest part is actually bringing awareness to an assumption. The NLP Meta Model is immensely useful in challenging distortions, generalisations and deletions but I still see top level NLP’ers failing to challenge their assumptions. As you may have heard me talk about in previous videos that comes down to awareness. Awareness is the key.
So let me show you how to play the Peace Mapping Game. We start with a match box. What do you see? Do you see a match box or a box of matches?
If you see a box of matches you have made an assumption. Now just think – if you were going hiking would you just grab the box and throw it in your backpack or would you challenge your assumptions and shake the box?
So you shake the box and it sounds like matches but are the matches live or dead? So if you are smart you will challenge your assumptions and open the box to see how many live matches are in the box.
So you open the box and the matches look good but how do you know they will light when you need them? Are you just going to assume they will work? If you are smart you would at least test one of the matches to see if it lights.
So you have a box of live matches – and are you going to just throw them in your backpack? Are you just going to assume the matches will be good when you need them? I had a friend go hiking and at the end of the day he is tired – it is cold – and all he wants to do is light a fire, eat some food, dry his clothes and go to sleep – but then he discovers the matches are wet – oops! So when you transport and store the matches you can’t just assume they will stay dry – you have to take some steps to ensure that – which means you have to learn to constantly challenge your assumptions.
So in the NLP Peace Mapping Game if you prove that your assumptions are correct then you get one point. If you discover that your assumption was wrong then you get two points. So remember you get double points for making the effort to challenge your assumptions / beliefs.
You can play the game by yourself but it is a lot more fun with a group of friends. Kick it off by explaining the match box game and then search for anything in your immediate environment and then move towards more abstract concepts and ideas. You will need to focus in on one specific item. Here are some possible topics.
1. Are you assuming that a friend will arrive on time?
2. Are you assuming that there are drinks and food in the fridge?
3. Are you assuming that your favourite news channel reports the truth?
4. Are you assuming that a BBC history documentary is reporting the truthful facts?
5. Are you assuming that a person’s narration of an event which occurred in their life time is accurate and true?
6. Are you assuming that what they teach you at school and university is accurate and true?
As I said before you will need to focus in on one specific item. So now it is over to you to get into the habit of challenging your assumptions. Try and bring your friends into the game. So rather than disputing a topic and getting into an argument – invite your friend / enemy to play the NLP Peace Mapping Game. If your friend / enemy agrees to play the Peace Mapping Game then you get 10 points for learning how to motivate them - and a good psychological tactic is to let your friends win.
Remember if you challenge an assumption and you are wrong then you get 2 points. Once your friends are all fired up with dopamine for being right then you can shift the topic to an area which you would like them to explore – but ordinarily a topic they would have avoided. Either way you will win. I will leave it to you to choose the challenging topics.
If you would like to learn more about how to uncover the truth on any topic then please take a look at the NLP Peace Mapping online course. This is a course in investigative journalism which teaches you how to uncover the truth using the NLP Communication Model. Trust me it is a good course.
