(By Abby Eagle) I have been in the field of NLP, Hypnotherapy and Meditation since 1984 and I can tell you with conviction based upon experience that changing bad habits is not rocket science.
Even though the medical and psychological professions have made it seem like dealing with cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol, eating disorders, binge eating, bulimia, anorexia, anger management and gambling requires a different therapeutic approach they in fact all share a similar pattern and can be dealt with in a few sessions in the same clinic. If you look at the content they look different but if you map out the structure of the behaviour you will find they all share a similar process. Let's use cigarettes as an example.
Cigarettes don't just jump into the smokers mouth and light themselves. It requires active participation. There has to be some thought that drives the action. We identify that thought by having the client think back to a time when they had a cigarette and asking the question, "How did you know that it was time to have a cigarette? Was it something that you saw, a picture you made in your mind or something that you said to yourself?"
If the smoker responds by saying, "Something I said to myself", then we ask, "What did you say to yourself?" The client generally answers, "I feel like a cigarette". If they feel like a cigarette all well and good then the behaviour follows but if they want to stop smoking then what? The answer is to send the thought back to the unconscious mind much like returning an unwanted item to a shop. We say in effect I don't want that thought I want something else. A simple way to do that is to ask, "Does this thought serve me?" If the answer is "No", then we might ask, "What thought would serve me right now?" So we learn to use questions to get the mind on track to a desired outcome. But getting into the drivers seat of your life requires more than just asking questions. It requires artful use of questions, statements and commands.
If you are like me then at the end of the day you probably write a 'To Do List' to remind you what to do the next day. But as I talked about in a previous article we need more than a 'To Do List', we need a 'To Be List'. On our 'To Be List' we get clear on who we need to be to complete the items on the 'To Do List'. The underlying process involves asking the right questions, and making the right statements and commands such that you wear the right hat, access and mobilise your resources, engage others and take the required steps to achieving the outcome.
We start by bring awareness to our state of mind and our behaviour. Awareness is always the key. Then we ask a question, "Is this what I want to be thinking right now? Is this what I want to be doing right now?" If not then we ask, "What thought would serve me right now, or what would I rather be doing right now? We don't get into an argument with ourselves. We just bring awareness to our thought processes and our behaviour and then pose an appropriate question to the unconscious mind.
Once we know what we want to do then we might use a command and say, "Go for a walk". As you get ready to go for a walk you might make statements to self and say, "I am going to walk for thirty minutes and get back in time for dinner". Then you might make a command and say, "Okay let's go. Common let's move".
So by artfully using questions, statement and commands we get ourselves from the back seat into the drivers seat of our life.
To summarise what you experience and achieve in life is directly related to the conversations that you have with yourself. That is the questions that you ask yourself, the statements that you make, and the commands that you give yourself.
