A friend phoned me with the following question: “How do I bring more love into my life?” So I told her the following story:
Once upon a time there was a sunny lane-way behind a small village in the country. The lane-way was a little outside of the village which made it attractive to lovers who used to take a detour through it just to enjoy the sound of the wind through the trees, the singing of the birds and the fragrance of the flowers.
A young man would sometimes stop at a pretty flower, gaze at its beauty and remark to his lady friend: “Isn’t this flower gorgeous. Just smell its fragrance. It is intoxicating.” She would move close to the flower, take a deep breath and sigh, “It is so gorgeous.”
He would continue, “Just like you.” Then the lovers would hold hands and kiss. The flower responding to the affections from the lovers would become even more radiant and release a little more perfume to the wind.
But there was one lonely flower that did not get any attention at all. No lovers stopped to admire her. She was often tense, anxious and depressed. In a word she was unhappy. One bright sunny morning when it seemed that many couples were admiring the beauty of all the other flowers in the lane-way it became too much for her and she burst into tears. An angel passing by stopped and asked her what was wrong. The flower said, “I hear about this energy called God, yet I don’t experience His love. I try hard to feel love but I don’t feel anything. Tell me, how do I bring more love into my life?”
The angel flapped her wings gently as she hovered in mid air. The sunlight reflecting off of her golden wings. “How can you expect to experience more love in your life if your petals are closed?” said the angel.
The flower replied, “But I am scared that if I open my petals that someone may damage them.”
The angel said, “Take courage. Just try opening one petal at a time and see what happens. I will stay close by to protect you.”
The flower timidly opened a petal. The sunlight caught the inside of the petal. The flower recalled in surprise closing her petals tighter than before. “What happened?” said the angel
“I saw the light of the sun and I felt its warmth on my petal. It felt so beautiful but I felt vulnerable.” said the flower.
“If you want to feel more love then you have to risk feeling vulnerable said the angel. In fact if you want to experience the love of God in all His glory then you will have to open your heart and feel totally vulnerable. But, continued the angel, I promise I will stay with you at all times, even if you can not see me, I will be holding you.”
The flower, feeling encouraged, began to open her petals once again. The sunlight blazed into the pit of her heart. The warmth of the sun heated her sap which flowed faster through her stems and she felt energised. A bird flew close by and she recalled in fear and closed her petals tightly. Once again she felt the all too familiar cold feeling return to her stems. Her petals felt stiff. Her sap became sluggish and she felt sad.
“It is only by opening yourself totally to the experience of God that you will feel His love.” said the angel. “I will always be by your side. Hold me in your heart and open your petals once again.”
This time the flower set an intention to open her heart, her body and soul to the universe, no matter the consequences. With a dramatic unfolding she unfurled her petals. Her little heart pounded. The increased pressure of the sap in her stems caused her pink petals to swell in a magnificent radiance. She felt a red blush coming to her cheeks and as her sacred juice exuded into the base of the flower an exquisite fragrance exploded from the pores of the flower. The wind took the fragrance and played with it, spreading the perfume along the lane-way. Within moments a bee zoned in on the flower and nuzzled in amongst her wet stamens. And as the bee licked the nectar the flower shuddered as exquisite sensations cascaded in waves of effervescent bubbles throughout her stems.
A humming bird flew close to the flower. Its brilliant plumage flashing in the sun. The flower felt totally vulnerable but she opened her heart to God. With great sensitivity the bird sucked some of the juiciest honey nectar from the pit of the flower. Waves of ecstasy rolled through the flowers stems. Her petals pulsated like the wings of a butterfly and then she heard the laughter of two young lovers. Hand in hand they came close to examine her beautiful colours. They smelled her perfume, sighed, looked into each others eyes and gave each other a passionate kiss.
The flower was happy.
