In this article I want to show you a simple NLP technique which you can use to neutralise a negative feeling towards someone.
This is an NLP submodality exercise.
First off I have to give you a basic understanding of NLP submodalities. We have five representational systems – five modalities of sensing – visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory – that is simplified to VAKOG. Since visual, auditory and kinesthetic are our most preferred systems then this is often shortened to VAK.
When you think, you create an internal representation of the world in the cinema of your mind in VAKOG. When you think in pictures using your visual sense - that is your visual modality of sensing then the picture has subdistinctions aka submodalities, for example. The image in mind could be in colour or black and white – it could be big or small – it could be close to you or far away – it could be a movie or a still – it could be in any location around your body, that is in front of you, up or down, to the side or behind you.
In the auditory channel there are also submodalities. For example, volume, tonality, tempo, accent, inflection, pauses, number of sounds or voices, location, etc.
In the kinesthetic channel you have submodalities such as location of the sensation, is it warm or cool, small or big, tensing or relaxing, still or moving, etc. There are also submodalities in the olfactory and gustatory senses as well.
Okay so what I would like you to understand is that how you encode your thoughts determines what the content of the thought means to you and what feeling is associated with the thought. If you change the way you encode the thought – if you change the submodality distinctions then you change the meaning of the thought.
Did you get that? if you change the way that you encode the thought – if you change the submodality distinctions then you change what the thought means to you and how you should think and feel about the thought – and what action you should take or not.
So now for this exercise I would like you to think of someone who you dislike, perhaps a politician – someone who irks you when you think of them. Now imagine that you pour liquid chocolate over them and it quickly sets. What happens? In my case the image of the adult person now looks like a small chocolate bunny figurine that you see in the shops at Easter. You may need to this with a number of memories of the person and anything associated with them like their car and their house. What should happen is that you now have a visual memory of them as chocolate figurines – which should have a totally different feeling associated with it – perhaps of disinterest – something like “who cares?”.
So let’s reiterate – you have an image of a person in mind who you dislike – you have negative feelings about that person – and these feelings do not serve you. Now you could change the key submodalities one at a time – or you could change the submodalities to a memory that is healed, long gone and means nothing to you now – or you could change the submodalities into that of an inanimate chocolate figurine that you see on the shelf in a supermarket – and in doing so you change a lot of key submodalities with one small action.
Now for some people, chocolate may not be the best way to change the submodalities – another way could be to see the disliked person as a cartoon character – or a tiny bunny rabbit with big ears.
