In this NLP article I want to remind you of some of the basic principles that are required for you to step up and become the next best version of yourself.
Back in the eighties, Richard Bandler suggested that his students become, “a learning machine” – and Tony Robbins drew upon an attitude that the Japanese have which he termed, “CANI” – constant and never ending improvement.
So if you set a goal for yourself at the start of each and every day – which is to improve upon everything that you do by just 1% then at the end of the day you would have made incremental improvement. By the end of the week you should have made noticeable improvement. After a couple of months you should be feeling quite proud of the progress that you have made.
So at the end of the day you write your to-do list. The next day the to-do list tells you what you need to focus on. You take action on the items on that list – then at the end of the day you look back and review everything that happened and you ask yourself:
- What did I learn today?
- What could I have done better?
- How could I improve upon what I did and do a better job next time?
So once you have reviewed the learnings then you shift to the tasks that you need to give yourself in the coming days and you ask:
- What do I need to focus on in the next couple of days?
- What are some tasks that I need to give myself?
- What are some challenges that I need to face up to in the next couple of days?
You write those things down on a new to-do list and put it where you will see it.
So rather than making excuses or blaming others and the world for the results that you got – you learn to step back as a dispassionate observer – and take a good look at how you spent your day – the mindset that you had – and how you spent your time – then you focus in on stepping up to the next best version of yourself and in so doing you become a learning machine.
You review your days with a sense of fascination and curiosity – you see what worked and what did not work – you acknowledge that you are the key player in your life – and you learn to take responsibility to some degree for everything that happens in your life – and you ask yourself intelligent questions like,
- What am I learning?
- How can I become more efficient and effective today?
- How can I become more authentic?
- How can I become a better human being today?
- What is the mindset that I need to cultivate?
- What are the words that I need to use?
- What are the feelings that I need to hold?
- What are the behaviours that I need to change?
- What do I need to do?”
And then you take action while those thoughts are fresh in your mind.
